June 1 marked the competition deadline for a global initiative sponsored by the Open Architecture Network and Architecture for Humanity, the 2009 Classroom Challenge.

“According to the World Bank, educating all children worldwide will require the construction of 10 million new classrooms in more than 100 countries by 2015. At the same time, millions of existing classrooms are in serious need of repair and refurbishment.
The 2009 Open Architecture Challenge invites the global design and construction community to collaborate with primary and secondary school teachers and students to create smarter, safer, and more sustainable learning environments.” Orient Global

The Indy chapter of Architecture for Humanity partnered with the Project School to develop proposals for expanding their existing facility while embracing their wholistic teaching philosophy. The Project School is a cornerstone redevelopment of the Martindale on the Monon district on the near north side of Indianapolis. My collaborator’s Marco Landron, Rene Martinez, Javier Rodriguez and I lent our vision and time to participate in this exciting initiative.

Nicki,

It was great to see your team solution for the classroom of the future at the AFH meeting Thursday night. The classroom in a shipping container was very creative and the presentation looked sharp.

It was terrific to hear all four Indy entries made it through round one of the judging! Good luck to your team and to the others.

It will be interesting to hear the Project School’s reaction to the ideas AFH developed. See you soon…

Janet,

We also worked on this competition and found it a great way to give back to the community. Your project looks like your team put a lot of effort and hard work into it! Great innovative ideas! I look forward to hearing more about it at tonight’s meeting!

Hopefully one of our teams from the AFH Indiana Chapter will be a finalist! Good luck to your team!

Donna, Yes technology is a key ingredient in the Classroom of the future and while the first phase of the Project School did not include wireless technology I am sure this will come in the future.

The storage modules all have specific functions, such as the teachers desk module, the listening corner, information center, etc. One unit houses tack boards and marker boards that flip out to create mobile visual display space. The school has a noise issue so the backs of the units are designed with acoustical panels to help buffer the sound.

Thanks for the encouraging words!

Janet:
First, I wanted to applaud you for sending out your first official BLOG … way to go, JT. Secondly, you should be complemented for sharing your wonderful news about what you and your Team have embarked upon. I can’t think of a more worthwhile and deserving project to work on than something relating to the educational welfare and well being of our children … so as to provide them with a brighter and “greener” future. Your group’s collaboration with primary & secondary school teachers is also noteworthy. Having seen your previous design & artwork on projects as well as your innovative vision, I would expect to hear only good news from your Challenge results. Good luck on the competition!
Sincerely,
Gary

The collaboration with the students and staff is so important to understand where this community is going with education. I like the solution of the movable storage wall. The use of technology in the space will be vital in the success of the space. Do you have wireless technology in the classroom?

Is the back wall a surface that you can write on?

Good luck on the Classroom Challenge Project…
